We all know what wonderful food oatmeal is. It fills up your tummy in the winter and even helps to reduce cholesterol. Just one cup of oatmeal has approximately 4 grams of fiber, which helps to balance glucose levels and prevents your blood sugar levels from spiking after you eat. This trick makes oatmeal great for helping to ward off diabetes.
Did you know that oatmeal is just as wonderful for the outside of your body as it is for your inner health? It is extremely soothing and hydrating for even the most sensitive skin. Winter seems to bring its own cold-weather woes to our already overworked, overstressed skin. To combat these problems, nourish and heal your skin and give yourself a little "me" time.
Take a look at some wonderful recipes for your skin that are super simple and pleasingly effective.
Oatmeal Bath for Eczema or Dry Skin
4 cups oatmeal
1 fine net or old stocking
Place the oatmeal in the net; tie closed. Position the oatmeal-filled net in your bathtub so the water runs directly over the oatmeal and into the bath. Get in the bath, then you and the oatmeal should soak 15 to 30 minutes. If desired, remove the oatmeal from the net and pack on swollen, red, irritated skin.
Oatmeal Facial Scrub for All Skin Types
1 Tbsp. ground almonds (almonds should be ground to a fine powder)
1 tsp. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. water
2 Tbsp. oatmeal
Combine ingredients in a bowl; mix until a paste forms. If the paste looks too thick, add a little water. Be careful not to add too much water, as the paste should have a crumbly consistency.
Using an upward motion, work the paste into the skin. This can be a little messy but the results are worth it. The oatmeal will fall off your face, leaving behind a film. Allow the film to penetrate the skin for 15 to 20 minutes or until the film hardens. Rinse your face well.
Note: If you have sensitive skin, you can substitute chamomile water for the vinegar.
The oatmeal is very soothing for the skin and helps to bind moisture to the skin. The almonds are an exfoliant and also help to lighten the skin and give it a beautiful glow. The apple cider vinegar is great for balancing the pH of the skin and alleviating oiliness. Using chamomile water instead of the vinegar is soothing, calming and acts as an anti-inflammatory for sensitive or sore skin.
Oatmeal Mask for Oily Skin
1/2 cup cooked oatmeal
1 egg white
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 cup mashed apple
Combine ingredients in a bowl; mix until it forms a paste. Apply paste to your skin; leave on 10 minutes, then rinse well.
All-over Body Scrub
1 cup finely ground oatmeal
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup brewed regular coffee, cooled
1/2 cup olive, grape seed or almond oil
Combine ingredients in a bowl; mix well. While in the shower, apply the mixture all over your moist body; rinse well.
I hope you enjoy these recipes and tips that I share with you. But even more, I hope you remember to take a little time for yourself each day and treasure each moment of the holidays and this new winter season.
Use these tips and recipes at your own discretion. These are not prescriptions, merely suggestions based on our research and on things we use ourselves. Not everything will work for everybody, but I have had great success with these recipes. If I weren't willing to use it myself, I wouldn't suggest it to you. DeNeane
